Nabuin Agricultural Research and Development Institute

Nabuin ZonalAgricultural Research and Development Institute is one of the sixteen PublicAgricultural Research Institutes under the National Agricultural ResearchOrganization established by the NAR ACT (2005). The institute is mandated toconduct and manage applied and adaptive agricultural research and facilitatethe development and dissemination of appropriate agricultural technologies thataddress the specific needs of the North Eastern dry land Agro-ecological zoneof Teso and Karamoja. The zonecomprises of 15 districts of Serere, Soroti, Kaberamaido, Ngora, Kumi, Bukedea,Amuria, Katakwi, Napak, Moroto, Nakapiripirit, Kotido, Abim, Kaabong, andAmudat. Nabuin ZARDI is located in Nakapiripirit district. 


Nabuin was initially, a GovernmentInstitute established in the early 1963 to serve the then greater KaramojaDistrict with knowledge and extension services in agriculture. However, during the1979 unrest and subsequent years, the centre was vandalized and its entireinfrastructure was completely destroyed and therefore ceased to be operational.

 

Following various reformsin Agricultural research, the National Agricultural Research Act 2005 re-establishedNabuin as a semi-autonomous Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute(ZARDI) catering for the North-Eastern agro ecological zone of Karamoja andTeso .  After its re-establishment NabuinZARDI, started operating from Serere (former District Farm Institute) becauseof the insecurity and absence of infrastructure at the Nabuin station inLorengedwat, Nakapiripirit district. However, in 2010, Nabuin ZARDI opened amain office in Moroto Municipality, as a way to operate closer to and developinfrastructure at Nabuin in Nakapiripirit. And to date, Nabuin ZARDI has movedall its operations to the Nabuin station in Lorengedwat, NakapiripiritDistrict.
