08 Feb Nutrifish Project Donates to Mwanamugimu Nutrition Unit Mulago Hospital through OPM
NutriFish project is ‘Harnessing Dietary Nutrients of under-utilized fish and fish-based products in Uganda implemented by Makerere University at the College of Natural Sciences (Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences); National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI); NUTREAL Uganda Limited; and McGill University, Canada. The project is co-founded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada and the Australian Centre for Agricultural Research (ACIAR) under the Cultivate Africa’s Future Fund Phase 2 (CultiAF2).
On 4th May following the call by His Excellency the President of Uganda asking Ugandans to contribute to fellow Ugandans during the COVID 19 pandemic, Nutrifish Project and Uganda National Women Fish Organization (UNWFO) heeded to the call.
While receiving the donations, the Minister in charge of General duties in the office of the Prime Minister Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut appreciated the donations. ” Ëvery day we get more and more people who come to donate either money or food and health equipment., we want to thank you on behalf of the president, I want to appreciate your generosity, your kindness and your hearts of gold. As we all know this fight cannot be won by individuals. But ever since the president made the call to donate towards the fight against Covid 19, people have come out to give generously, and I thank you”. NutriFish Project team was led by the Principal Investigator Dr. Jackson Efitre a senior Lecturer from the Department of Zoology, Entomology & Fisheries Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences of Makerere University; Dr. Winnie Nkalubo the Director of Research at the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI); Dr. Anthony Taabu Munyaho the Executive Secretary Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) of the East African Community (EAC); Associate Professor Dorothy Nakimbugwe the Director of Nutreal Limited; Dr. Esther Babirekere the of Director Mwanamugimu Nutrition Unit, Mulago Hospital.
While handing over the donations, the Commissioner for Aquaculture in the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries, Ms. Joyce Ikwaput Nyeko who led the two teams announced the donation from Nutrifish project worth 22 million Uganda shillings of 2.5 tons of maize meal enriched with Mukene and amaranth (doodo) seeds. A 200g serving of the maize meal provides 32% energy, 40% protein, 28% iron, 56% zinc and 36% vitamin A of recommended daily requirements making it a complete meal for vulnerable children; pregnant and breast feeding mothers. The Commissioner also announced the second donation from Uganda National Women Fish Organization (UNWFO). Both donations were handed over to the and later delivered and handed over to Mwanamugimu Nutrition Unit at Mulago Hospital-Kampala.
