Dr. Mulindwa Henry Aaron

Director of Research, MUZARDI

Dr. Mulindwa Henry Aaron is the New Director of Research at Mukono Zonal Agricultural research and Development Institute (MUZARDI) one of the nine ZARDIs under the National Agricultural Research organization (NARO).

Qualifications

He is an expert in Animal Breeding and Genetics, with a Ph.D. from Universität für Bodenkultur Wien, Austria, complemented by an MSc. Tropical Animal production from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania, and a BSc from Makerere University, Uganda.

His career spans significant achievements in research for over 18 years, and community development within the agricultural sector.

He formerly served at NaSARRI where he started as a Research Officer II and was later transferred to NaLIRRI where he rose to the ranks of Senior Research Scientist and Principal Research Officer. His duties focused on enhancing beef, dairy and poultry production through innovative breeding strategies. He became a Program Leader for Livestock Breeding Research (2011-2017) and successfully implemented crossbreeding plans in Karamoja which significantly improved beef production in Amudat and Nakapiripit districts.  

He also spearheaded the setup of Assisted reproduction technology platform at NARO-NaLIRRI and a crossbreeding program for increased goat meat productivity at NaLIRRI-Maruzi campus in April 2022. He was instrumental in the establishment of Jersey cattle herd which is a component of the dairy zero waste platform at NaLIRRI-Nakyesasa.

Dr. Mulindwa also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Animal Genetic Resources and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB), where he provides strategic oversight and governance in animal breeding practices. His dedication to advancing agricultural sciences, fostering community development, and driving impactful research initiatives continues to shape the future of animal breeding and genetics in East Africa.

Professional Career

His career began as Program Manager at VEDCO in 2005, where he oversaw community development initiatives, including establishing piggery and poultry units in Luwero and Mukono districts. His role extended to training farmer groups in modern production techniques, emphasizing sustainable practices.

He previously collaborated with Vetline Ltd, a private company that offers Artificial insemination services and extension in pig production. He provided the technical framework that led to the development of a data collection tool, “Detro Pig-Boost” that enables sustainable data-driven decisions to improve Uganda’s pig production, health, breeding and welfare.  The Pig-Boost tool helps to improve decision making of farmers and thus performance and efficacy in managing their pig herds both for improved genetic merit and reduced disease impacts.

Research Career 

As an academician, Dr. Mulindwa has a good research record of 20 Publications in peer-reviewed journals including two books (Doi: 10.3389/978-2-8325-5186-8 and ISBN: 9789970926909) and 2 book chapters. He has co-supervised numerous postgraduate students (supervised 3 M.Sc. students) and has been an external examiner of seven (7) MSc. Thesis from Makerere University. His research focuses on enhancing livestock productivity and genetic diversity, contributing significantly to agricultural policy and practice in Uganda. His leadership and expertise indicate his passion and commitment to sustainable livestock production, making him an important figure in Uganda’s agricultural sector.
