In March 2023, the Institute hosted and trained 20 staff of Fairventures Worldwide and Latek Uganda to enhance their capacity in cloning of Hass avocado and Eucalyptus trees. The exercise involved both classroom and hands-on sessions. The classroom sessions included an overview of sexual and asexual (vegetative) propagation techniques. The participants were also briefed on vegetative propagation techniques, including grafting, where participants were introduced to grafting requirements and procedures. The Practical session included identifying scions, rootstocks, and hands-on grafting techniques of Avocado. The cloning session of Eucalyptus had a theoretical introduction to cloning, such as the requirements and procedure. In contrast, the practical session covered establishing mother gardens, tunneling, and cloning.
With this knowledge, the team is well-equipped to manage germplasm and ensure production of quality seedlings from the various nurseries run by Fairventures across the country.
