The National Agricultural Research Organisation was established by the National Agricultural Research Act 2005 as a body corporate with the mandate to provide strategic direction for publicly funded agricultural research in Uganda.

The organisation is composed of the Council as its governing body, Committees of Council, a Secretariat for its day-to-day operations, and semi-autonomous Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARI’s) under its policy guidance. The Director General invites suitably qualified Ugandans to apply for the following positions at the NARO Secretariat and respective PARIs.

Age Limit: Applicants should not be more than 55 years of age.
Tenure: The tenure of office is a 5-year contract renewable upon satisfactory performance.

Job Purpose: To develop and implement research projects and partnerships that further the scientific understanding of soils, cultivate awareness of soil health, and develop and promote the practical application of science-based practices to ensure sustainable soil productivity through the protection and rebuilding of working lands.

Specific responsibilities
  • To conduct research to identify soil-related challenges faced by farmers and their associated environmental implications.
  • To conduct research and develop technologies to address agricultural water challenges for increased productivity in view of the current challenges of climate change and variability.
  • To conduct research aimed at improving rainwater productivity through improved water use efficiency.
  • To conduct research and develop technologies to address soil nutrient depletion through improved soil fertility management and enhanced nutrient use efficiency.
  • To participate in the characterization and dissemination of various soil types with their recommended management practices.
  • To continuously explore, identify, and conduct research to address emerging issues affecting soil resource use for increased productivity, such as climate change and soil pollution.
  • Develop and refine methods and best practices for measuring soil properties via field based in situ approaches and conventional laboratory analyses.
  • Participate in the formulation of strategic management plans for the Research Institute, including the development of annual work plans and budgets.
  • To identify, evaluate, and apply for grant opportunities that advance the soil research agenda of the Institute and Uganda.
  • Prepare concept papers, technical and scientific papers, reports and other documentation for publication and dissemination.
  • Provide technical leadership and consultation to team members, professional co-workers, and other collaborators to ensure the successful implementation of research projects.
Minimum Academic Qualifications and Experience
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or Natural Resources
  2. PhD in soil science.
  3. The applicant should have conducted research and published as the first author and/or co-author of at least four articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  4. At least eight years’ experience in conducting agricultural research in soil science fields as evidenced by reports and publication records from a reputable Organisation.
  5. Excellent leadership, inter-personal and communication skills including demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in teams.

Job Purpose: A successful applicant will be responsible for planning, designing, conducting research, and presenting findings in respective fields for enhanced and sustainable agricultural production.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating research programs on forage species and their responses to animal production.
  • Identify constraints to livestock and forage production.
  • Collect and evaluate promising forage production.
  • Collect and evaluate promising forage germplasm and feed resources for improved livestock nutrition.
  • Study the effects of different forage/feed resources on livestock production.
  • Develop strategies for improving livestock production through improved nutrition.
  • Determine nutritional requirements by species, breed, physiological status, and production levels.
  • Identify feed resources for specified animal species.
  • Provide models for rational feed utilization, generate feed composition tables, and set feeding standards.
Minimum Academic Qualifications and Experience:
  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Livestock Production or Veterinary Medicine.
  2. Master’s Degree in Livestock Sciences, including but not limited to livestock health, livestock nutrition, livestock production, and livestock genetics
  3. Should have a minimum of three years of demonstrated working experience in a related field and a proven record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  4. Possession of a PhD or admission to a PhD Programme is an added advantage.

Job Purpose: A successful applicant will be responsible for planning, designing, and conducting research and presenting findings in their respective fields for enhanced and sustainable aquaculture production.

Specific Responsibilities:
  1. Planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating programs that contribute to aquaculture production in the region.
  2. Identifying constraints and suggesting mitigation measures that contribute towards increased aquaculture production in the region and in the country.
  3. Collaborating with NARIs, the private sector, academia, and line stakeholders to identify, collect, and profile raw materials for developing least-cost fish feed for improved aquaculture production in the region.
  4. Developing regional, fish species-specific feeding guides.
  5. Propagating farmer-preferred and high-value fish seed for increased aquaculture production.
  6. Developing and promoting regional-appropriate aquaculture production systems.
  7. Collaborating with the private sector, local government, and other partners to guide fish farmers on appropriate, cost-effective aquaculture technologies.
  8. Developing and adapting technologies for mitigating aquatic animal health challenges in the region.
  9. Developing value-adding technologies for aquaculture products appropriate to the region.
  10. Developing training manuals for disseminating aquaculture technologies in the region.
  11. Disseminating aquaculture technologies in scientific publications and popular versions (booklets, newspaper articles, leaflets, and flyers)

  • Master’s Degree in Aquaculture

Job Purpose: Ensuring the security of NARO’s land assets by providing technical leadership in the management of land matters.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

  1. Establishing and regularly updating the NARO land cadastre for easy access to land information and planning.
  2. Coordinating surveys and titling of NARO institutional lands
  3. Undertaking cadastral verifications to support decision-making on land matters.
  4. Preparing land use maps for NARO institutional lands for improved land use planning and governance.
  5. Undertaking capacity building of farm managers and human resource officers on cadastral tools for land management for improved land governance and land use planning.
  6. Providing technical liaison with both national and international institutions on matters of land management.
  7. Ensuring that Institutes develop and implement land-use plans.
  8. Ensuring land use is compliant with regulations, making suggestions for sustainable use, and researching the impact of development.
  9. Working with the legal office in matters of land litigation.
  10. Performing any other tasks that may be provided by the Director Corporate Services and /or Management from time to time.
Minimum Academic Qualifications and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree Surveying, Geo-informatics, Physical Planning, Land Use Management or Natural Resources with a bias in land use, from a recognized Institution.
  • Master’s Degree in any of the above-mentioned fields from a recognized Institution.
  • Knowledgeable in either Surveying or Cartography is an added advantage.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in coordinating issues of land surveys, titling, acquisition and appropriation in a government institution is an added advantage.
  • Must have formal training in the field of GIS and Remote Sensing and demonstrable experience working with mapping software or AutoCAD for land management.
  • Must be conversant with institutional and national legal frameworks and mechanisms on land governance and management.
