Meet Professor Majalija Samuel, the Director of Research at the National Livestock Resources Research Institute (NaLIRRI). With a career dedicated to veterinary education, research leadership, and management, Prof. Majalija’s journey is marked by expertise and commitment.

He graduated from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in 1994, continuing his academic pursuits with a Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine in 1997. His academic journey culminated in a PhD in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (Microbiology) from the University of Cape Town in 2009.

Prof. Majalija brings over 25 years of rich and diverse experience. At Makerere University, he advanced from a Teaching Assistant to Associate Professor in the Department of Biosecurity, Ecosystems & Veterinary Public Health. He has supervised numerous graduate students, mentored young researchers, and contributed extensively to research projects, securing grants and publishing over 40 manuscripts in refereed journals. Additionally, he served as Deputy Principal at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity.

Beyond academia, Prof. Majalija has made significant international contributions. He served as the Country Focal Person/Program Manager for One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) in Uganda, managing international projects and fostering strategic partnerships across East and Central Africa.

His research outputs have informed national policies and introduced innovative solutions for livestock health and production. Prof. Majalija has spearheaded institutional reforms, pioneered curriculum innovations, and established platforms for academic-community engagement.

Recognized with distinguished awards and scholarships, including the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowships, Prof. Majalija is celebrated for his commitment to academic excellence, research leadership, and community impact. His visionary leadership continues to shape the landscape of Veterinary Education and Research Management.
