The National Agricultural Research Organisation is established by the National Agricultural Research Act 2005 as a body corporate with the mandate to provide strategic direction for publicly funded agricultural research in Uganda. The organisation is composed of the Council as its governing body, Committees of Council, a Secretariat for its day-to-day operations with semi-autonomous Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARI’s) under its policy guidance. The Director General invites suitably qualified Ugandans to apply for the following positions at PARIs and NARO Secretariat.

Position: Principal Artificial Intelligence Officer (1 Post)
Reports to: Deputy Director General Research

Job Purpose: To provide strategic leadership in the development, implementation, governance, and scaling of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Data Science, and Advanced Analytics solutions that support agricultural research, innovation, technology development, knowledge management, decision-making, and service delivery across the National Agricultural Research Organization.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience.
  1. A PhD in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  2. At least six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Digital Transformation, Software Development, Research Informatics or related fields. Three of which should have been served at Senior Officer level or equivalent in a reputable institution.
  3. Demonstrated experience leading design, development, deployment and management of enterprise information systems and AI-enabled solutions.

Specific duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Strategic Leadership and AI Governance
    1. Lead the formulation, implementation, monitoring and review of NARO’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy, policies, standards and governance frameworks.
    2. Provide Technical leadership on AI adoption and digital transformation initiatives across NARO.
    3. Advise Management on emerging AI technologies, opportunities, risks and investments relevant to agricultural research and development.
    4. Develop institutional AI roadmaps aligned with national development priorities and NARO’s strategic objectives.
    5. Establish ethical, responsible AI, data governance, and risk management frameworks.
  2. Research and Innovation

    1. Spearheading research and development of AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Generative AI, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Predictive Analytics, and Decision Support Systems.
    2. Designing and overseeing development of AI-powered solutions for crop, livestock, fisheries, forestry, climate, soil and agribusiness applications.
    3. Coordinating AI research projects, innovation programmes, pilots and proof-of-concept initiatives.

    1. Support the establish of strategic partnerships with universities, research institutions, development partners, government agencies and private sector organizations.

  2. Capacity Building and Knowledge Management

    1. Lead AI capacity-building programmes for researchers, scientists, ICT personnel, and stakeholders.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Identify vector related problems affecting the Livestock industry and types of insects that have potential commercial value.
  2. Identify and characterize vectors causing livestock problems and prioritized vector/insects of economic importance and have potential commercial value.
  3. Study the biology and ecology of the vectors of economic importance and species of insects that have commercial value.
  4. Determine the risk factors attributed to vectors of economic importance and damages and consequences caused by vectors.
  5. Develop appropriate measures for controlling the effects of the vectors.
  6. Evaluate the commercial value of these insects/insect products and determining marketability/ market potential of commercial insects.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Design and implement farmer participatory research for crop commodity systems.

  3. Study the effects of various cropping systems on crop yield and determine the most efficient cropping system for optimum crop production.
  4. Identify nutrient needs of the various crops (plant nutrition) and develop corrective measures to alleviate the problems.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  2. Exhibit 3–5 years of demonstrated laboratory and field biogeochemistry experience, including plant, soil and gas sampling, trace gas fluxes, wet chemistry and chromatographic analysis.
  3. Ability to operate and troubleshoot advanced analytical platforms such as Gas Chromatography (GC), Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS), spectrophotometry and apply stable isotope tracer methods.
  4. Demonstrated expertise in ethnobotany, phytochemical profiling, or microbial ecology with direct application to forestry and agroforestry systems.

Job Purpose: To design, coordinate, and evaluate fish breeding and genetic improvement programmes aimed at enhancing aquaculture productivity, conserving genetic resources, and generating improved fish strains for sustainable aquaculture systems.

  2. Data Collection & Analysis: Collecting phenotypic data, pedigree tracking, and biometric measurements to estimate heritability and breeding values.
  3. Genomic Integration: Utilize modern genomic tools and marker-assisted selection (MAS) to accelerate genetic gain.

  1. Conduct research and monitoring water quality in aquaculture ponds, cages, and indoor fish production systems.

Job Purpose: To execute scientific research concerning plant-parasitic nematodes affecting food security and commercial value chains (e.g., roots, tubers, cereals, and vegetables).

Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  1. Applicants should possess a Master’s Degree in Plant Pathology or Entomology with specialization in Nematology.
  2. Should have a minimum of three years demonstrated working experience in plant parasitic nematodes in agricultural environment, knowledge in current nematicide products in the market, Knowledge working with biological control agents (esp. Bacterial derived).

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Identify nematode species, map geographic infestations, evaluate germplasm for resistance, and develop integrated nematode management strategies to safeguard crop health, seed quality, and soil productivity
  2. Oversee the collection and laboratory processing of soil and plant tissue samples using standard extraction techniques
  3. Identify major plant parasitic nematodes using light microscopy, morphometric measurements, and taxonomic keys.
  4. Determine yield losses associated with nematode infestations on the crops and devise strategies for controlling/minimizing crop yield loss due to nematode infestation.
  5. Conducting surveys to establish occurrence, distribution and population densities of the major nematode pests of field trials within NARO and contracted research organizations.
  6. Conduct laboratory, screen-house testing and field screening trials to evaluate breeding lines and parent lines and other crops for resistance or tolerance to economically damaging nematode species

Minimum Qualifications

  2. A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in intellectual property management within a busy agricultural research or innovation environment.

  4. Demonstrated experience in intellectual property management, including IP identification, disclosure processes, and support to IP Rights filings under various forms is an added advantage.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Coordinate engagements with NARO scientists to identify and evaluate new technologies and assess their intellectual property potential.
  2. Support the intellectual property disclosure process, including guiding researchers in the preparation and submission of Technology Disclosure Forms.
  3. Support IP capture, assessment, draft of IP applications, file for IP rights and provide IP management and commercialization support in line with NARO’s policy frameworks.

Job Purpose: To drive institute tractor that are in clean and sound mechanical  condition.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
  1. Applicants should possess Uganda Certificate of Education (“O” Level) with at least four passes.
  2. Possess a valid driving Permit with Class G, without any endorsements.
  3. Holding driving permit class D or D1 will be added advantage.
  4. Applicants should have a minimum of five (5) years relevant experience driving cars, /or vans machinery.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Undertake routine and preventive maintenance of tractor by checking and topping-up the level of fuel, oil, water, battery electrodes and tyre pressure before operating the tractor
  2. Inspect the tractor oil, hydraulic lines and other components, some of which are located underneath. Regularly clean the tractor and its implements, changing tyres as well as making minor repairs or adjustments and calibrations
  3. Operate tractor and trailer to transport farm products, livestock and materials to specified locations. Dismount and mount the tractor frequently to adjust implements and inspect its fluids and other components.
  4. Attach tractor implements weighing up to 100 pounds, such as graders, plough, discs and backhoes. Operating tractor and implements to plough and furrow agricultural land for precision planting of seed crops
  5. Load and offload farm products, livestock and other material supplies with due regard to environmental safety
  6. Maintain records of the tractors daily activity showing journey, mileage, fuel, oil and signature of authorising officer to account for all the journeys made.
  7. Observe traffic and safety precautions in order to prevent accidents and to avoid traffic violations. In addition, undertakes first aid in case of injuries.
  8. Report tractor accident to the traffic police, Estate Maintenance Officer and the Farm Manager, obtaining police abstract report and completing insurance accident report form in conformance to traffic rules and regulations.
  9. Requisition for fuel, lubricants and spare parts and maintain a record accounting for the same.
  10. Take the tractor for major service or repairs in accordance to planned preventive maintenance schedule or insurance accident report.
